Retro Gamer Retro Gamer: The Making of Mobile Miner

Converting retro games to mobile is a balancing act, as Wes Tam discovered when working on Magmic's Miner 2049er mobile update. "It was clear we had to modernise the game, and we debated which gameplay mechanisms would be preserved, and what new features to add", begins Wes. New levels and contemporary graphics, along with a refined control system, brought the modern version up to date.

Miner 2049er has the distinction of being the most difficult mobile game I've ever played. The game is actually a remake of the early 80s classic of the same name. Developer Magmic is quick to point out that the original was named "Game of the Year" by Electronic Games way back in 1984.

Miner 2049er was first introduced back in 1983 and told the tale of Bounty Bob hot on the trail of a dangerous desperado seeking refuge in an abandoned uranium mine. Loaded with hazardous radioactive waste, deadly mutant organisms, and lots of dangers, the mine itself proved to be more daunting than the villain.

If you remember the magazine Electronic Games, the Commodore 64, and Duran Duran's "Rio," then you're undoubtedly acquainted with the trials and tribulations of Bounty Bob. This platformer is a classic in every sense of the word, earning kudos from the day it launched, including a Game of the Year award from the aforementioned magazine in 1984. And it deserved it.

Between the ages of 10-12 I had a really odd habit of tearing the advertisements out of gaming magazines and taping them to my bedroom walls to form a mosaic of marketing appreciation and game envy. I remember closing my eyes many a night to the ad for Miner 2049er (this one here) for the Atari 400 / 800. This is all coming back to me because today marks the release of Miner 2049er for mobile phones.

Although 1983 will always be remembered by the gaming public as the year that gave us Donkey Kong, it was Miner 2049er that won over the thumbs of the critics, scooping the Electronic Game of the Year award in 1984 and being the first game to appear of the cover of Electronic Games Magazine. And now without any bothersome apes to overshadow it, Miner 2049er is getting a new lease of life on mobile phone.

Miner 2049er is old-school. Like, Mario Bros. 1, old-school. We're talking the blocky, chunkily-pixelated platformers that involved jumping over stuff, onto stuff, and climbing stuff. If that's all way before your time (it is mine, that's for sure), take a look over here for some history on the game, and a peek behind the scenes. The nice thing about games like this is that they never stop being fun, so Magmic gave it a makeover and ported it onto mobiles, including BlackBerry.

Miner 209er, a platforming classic from 1984 resurrected for mobile by Magmic, has been released on AT&T and Telus for download. The game is also on the slate for Sprint and T-Mobile, and can also be downloaded for Blackberry handheld devices.
